Comfort Dinner: Famous Sauce and Meatballs

Capture

Few things smell more wonderful and comforting than Marcella Hazan‘s tomato sauce and this rainy weeknight I could tell my family needed some hygge.

Thank goodness for this recipe, it is so easy! 3 ingredients and it simmers away politely making magic of butter and tomatoes. My dad introduced me to it not too long ago and just in time for my family career.  And not to toot too long about it but with a touch of cream it transforms into the best tomato soup I have ever had.

So sauce is done. My only input is use the best ingredients: good canned whole San Marzano tomatoes, good butter, and firm pretty onions.

For the meatballs, we have conducted actual taste tests: The Meatball Shop’s classic recipe, Marcella’s, Ina’s beef balls, and the clear winner, toddler approved and our new stable ball is Ina’s Spicy Turkey Meatballs. The competitors were worthy and absolutely great but there is something lovely about this turkey one- its round in flavor, the milk soaked breadcrumbs give it the ideal fluff, and the spice is just right. Thank you Ina. – btw I met her once and I would love a re-do because I was so shy the only thing I could muster was ‘my mom and I, love you’.

Coolest part about that story is I was in Montauk (East Hampton) and I lightly thought to myself ‘I would love to do something in relation to Ina today, I wish her Barefoot Contessa shop was still open’. I tried to google her house then gave up. Ten minutes later, real time,  I walked into Duryea’s Lobster Dock for lunch to see INA and Jeffery sitting at the back stools eating lobsters. The only other patrons in the restaurant. The universe one upped my wish and the magic of it took my breath away.

If you are reading this Ina, my mom and I, love you.

Hope you try the red sauce soon and it boosts your love and fulfillment for life. And IF you happen to have an Ina story, I am dying to hear it. Thanks for reading.
